Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15

Wednesday, December 29, 2010
Purchase: Aprox $55 @ Sephora
Oil Control: 9 out of 10
Makeup control: 8 out of 10

This stuff is fantastic--except for the price. This primer is mineral-based with SPF 15 so you can't get any better than that. It is suppose to create a smooth canvas for flawless makeup application. It is also suppose to minimize the appearance of pores and soften skins imperfections and fine lines. It is formulated without Parabens (cancer causing ingredients), synthetic fragrances and dyes. Also, it is formulated with naturally-derived titanium dioxide and zinc oxide instead of chemical sun-blocking agents! So for all of you Natural Products Only people, this stuff is for you! Furthermore, it is oil free so those of you with acne-prone skin are in the clear!

This stuff helped my make up last ALL day long and it also prevented my face from getting slick and oily after an 8 1/2 hour shift running around at work! So far, this is THE best mattifying primer I have been able to find.

The only flaws are the fact that it dried out my under-eye area so I would not suggest using this for concealer application there and the price. Unfortunately, it only comes in a 1 oz size ( like most of my other primers) and it is very costly so I'm not sure if I will ever have the money to actually purchase this, but it might make the perfect Bday gift!

Urban Decay Complexion Primer- Pore Perfecting

Monday, December 27, 2010
Purchase: Aprox $34 @ Sephora
Priming Power: 7 out of 10
Consistency: 4 out of 10
Mattifying effect: 7 out of 10

This primer states that it minimizes the look of pores and fine lines to deliver a soft-matte, airbrushed complexion without the heavy, greasy feel.

I have to say that this is a complete and total lie. So far, this is the thickest primer I have used on my face and I didn't like the feel of it at all. My face was instantly mattified but the effect did not last long, unfortunately, I am still searching for that perfect mattifying primer. This product's price is comparable to most other primers but I would suggest getting a tester of it before purchasing. Once again, that is why I LOVE Sephora! Always ask for a tester before investing your hard-earned cashola!

Happy testing! And don't forget to enter our December Contest!

Happy Boxing Day Shopping Everyone!

Sunday, December 26, 2010
I sure hope everyone's holiday was filled with family, friends and lots of fun! In the next couple of days I am going to do a quick video blog of the amazing haul of makeup I received this Xmas! Such a lucky girl I am!

Today I have two things for you, a product review and a dupe warning!

The Dupes:

MAC's Zangy vs. MACs Electric Eel
They are both a bright blue colour and are almost exactly the same! Zany is SLIGHTLY lighter than Electric Eel but you won't need both so make sure not to go overboard on Boxing day!

Product Review:
Price: Aprox $20 @ Sephora
Removing Power: 9.5 out of 10
Product application: 7 out of 10
Product removal: 3 out of 10
Packaging: 5 out of 10

I know that it says 'rinse-off' on the very front of the bottle but I am not the only one who could not read the light white writing on the clear packaging! This formula works GREAT! In fact, it works even better than my Lancome eye-makeup remover... HOWEVER, you have to RINSE this off which can be very inconvenient if someone else is in the bathroom and you have all your makeup supplies/vanity in another room. Also, if you forget, it tends to burn your eyes! A friend of mine and I were discussing yesterday how it burned and then I went to Sephora and a woman working their told us we had to rinse if off.... way to read the bottle ladies. So, if you purchase this, make sure to rinse it off or it might cause all the area around your eye to burn. I especially noticed this when I put on my eye moisturizer...  There is also a Clinique no-rinse formula in a purple bottle that might be a better choice than this but I have yet to try it out.

And don't forget to enter our December Contest for a chance to win a FULL SIZED ROC 3 in 1 toner/eyemakup remover/cleanser! The entire package is worth up to $50 in samples and full sized products!

Happy Shopping Ladies and Gents!

Kate Somerville ExfoliKate intensive Exfoliating Treatment

Thursday, December 23, 2010
Purchase: $22-190 @ Sephora
Rating: 7 out of 10

What it is formulated to do:
Kate Somerville ExfoliKate® Intensive Exfoliating Treatment is Kate's top-selling product, and the next best thing to seeing Kate in the Clinic! Treat yourself to this at-home facial for fantastic, instant results. This signature formula works both physically and enzymatically to deliver safe, dramatic results in one application. It effectively combats acne and blackheads, reduces discoloration, and polishes skin for a smooth complexion. Welcome to healthy skin, a healthy glow, and a healthy you!

What else you need to know:
This expert formula harnesses the power of fruit enzymes to clarify skin by removing dead cells and eliminating bacteria. It is ideal for all skin types, except sensitive skin.

In my opinion this stuff is way too expensive! It had a lot of very fine grains in it and I think it was a bit too harsh for my sensitive, acne-prone skin. One thing you have to worry about is over-exfoliating which I think would be easy to do if you used this stuff more than once a week. However, I did really like the way my skin felt after and would be interested to see how my skin looked/felt after multiple uses.

Wonderful Winter Skin!

Sunday, December 12, 2010
Is your skin looking pastier then usual? Is it becoming dull and dry? Well here are a few tips:

1. Use a body scrub in the shower, I love using St. Ives Apricot Scrub with Salicylic acid. This scrub has big chunky gains of apricot that help scrub all the dead skin off, and as an added bonus, the Salicylic acid helps with any acne you may be having or with those little red bumps you can get on the back of your arms. It also smells pretty good!
2. Either before or after you get in the shower, rub your body with a body loofa like the one to the left here. I bought this one for around $30 at Burnstein and Gold in Vic and then I found an exact replica for $5 at Walmart! How frustrating! I'll be honest, I felt really pressured by the sales person to buy this to help with ingrown hairs and a friend had the same experience! When using this, always brush towards your heart to help get the circulation going. It is great to use all over your body and helps give life back to dull skin, shed off dead skin, and helps with ingrown hairs! Fantastic!
3. As soon as you get out of the shower MOISTURIZE your WHOLE body! You want to keep the moisture in after a shower so that is why it's the best time. I also suggest doing it before bed time so that you have all night to soak up all the product and I often find I don't have any time to do it in the morning anyways!
4. Don't forget to keep your lips moisturized! I love having tons of lipgloss colours but it is so important to have lip chap to help prevent chapped lips if you are walking around outside.
5. Drink lots of water! I now this is good for all year round but in order to keep your skin moisturized you have to be well hydrated. Often, chapped lips are a sign of dehydration and as soon as you feel thirsty it already means you are hydrated so make sure to carry a water bottle with you as often as you can! I mean why else do we have such large purses??

Well, I hope these tips help! Let me know what you think or if you have any other suggestions...

And don't forget to enter our December Contest! I can't believe I'm GIVING AWAY a full sized product that I absolutely love! The full product itself retails for between $20-30!

Makeup shoot #1

Saturday, December 11, 2010
So I am trying to create a composite card for my MAC Pro card and I just finished my first shoot today! I'm still waiting for my boyfriend to photoshop them for me but here are the raw photos. Let me know what you think. There are also more available on the Fan Page so check them out and vote for your favourite!

Face:
Clinique 02 Acne Solutions Liquid Foundation
Clinique all about eyes concealer
Mac Prime + Prep on the T-Zone and under eye

Eyes:
Inner corner: Sephora Aspin Summer N23
Lid: Dior shimmery gray in the Extanse Pinks Pallet
Outer V: Rimmel Black Eyeshadow with NYX Morocco over top
Under eye: Too Faced Purple eyeliner with NYX Morocco over top
Upper Lid: MAC Brule eyeshadow (for blending as well)

I also have some exciting news! I just found where I can buy NYX! I see it on all the blogs these days and they are cheap and affordable with very pigmented colours but I couldn't find it in Canada until I realized they sell it at Pharmasave! Currently the one on Hillside has them for 20% off so I scored BIG! I suggest you check out the colours, they have a great selection and remind me a lot of the MAC products.  However, the sales ladies weren't so great there. One lady just stood and watched as Amanda and I searched through everything and didn't ask if we needed help, I assumed she thought we might steal them or something. Not very polite if you ask me!

Don't forget to enter our DECEMBER CONTEST for an amazing full sized product plus a lot of samples!

Are you a Sephora Insider?

Wednesday, December 8, 2010
Well you should be! Why? I have five great reasons:
#1. Because you would have received a $15-$20 off your next purchase gift card! Pretty amazing eh? Well, the only catch was I had to spend $40 to get $20 off but still, half price is pretty amazing! What did I buy? Well, you will have to wait and see during my FIRST EVER YOUTUBE BLOG REVIEW sometime during this week!

#2. They let you know about a million great deals and now that there is a store located right here in Victoria you can get tons of free stuff! I can't even count how many times they would send me a UPC for a free gift when we didn't have one here! I would always have to try to get someone in Vancouver to pick it up for me. It has taken the Victoria store awhile to get up to speed since they have just opened but by next year they should have all the free products in stock so first come first serve.

#3: Another great reason to join is so that you can get a FREE BIRTHDAY GIFT! That's right! Two years ago I received 3 free deluxe trial sized Sephora lip glosses! And last year I received a silver eyeshadow, mascara and mini silver eyeliner!

Great reason # 4: You get points that go towards amazing products! You receive 1 point for every dollar you spend so when you spend $100 you can pick a deluxed sized sample! And if you save up and reach 500, then you get a deluxe sampler package. Last time I got a smashbox lipgloss, mascara, facial primer and eye primer all in one cute package. Awesome deal!

#5: If you spend over $350 in one fiscal year you become a VIB for the rest of that year and the next year! What is VIB status? Very Important Beauty Status! First of all, you are given a 10% off your next purchase coupon, then around Xmas time you are given a 20% off coupon for one week to use however many times you want, then instead of getting a $15 Gift card you get a $20 one! And finally, you get tons of free deluxe samples and an even better birthday gift, invitations to special events, early access to products that have not-yet been released, exclusive gifts throughout the year and more!

So DO IT! And don't forget to enter our December Contest!

Ahhhh-Mazing!

Tuesday, December 7, 2010
Looking for something amazing to get your loved one for Xmas? Need a reward for all your hard work this year? Look no further!
I just came back from the most tranquil spa experience I have ever had!
Ashlee Kazenbroot at Sanctum Holistics Clinic & Education Centre helped me find my centre after a very hectic year.
The appointment started with a few general questions about my skin, health, and what kind of treatment I wanted. I opted for a Swedish Massage complete with a Facial treatment. Throughout the interview, Ashlee's voice was so calming that I could immediately feel my muscles relaxing.
If you know me well, then you know how uptight I am and it is next to impossible to get me to relax for more than three minutes. However, every time I have a treatment with Ashlee I am quiet and calm within five minute and don't make a peep the entire time (FYI the treatment was approximately 2 hours).
Ashlee was very professional throughout the entire treatment and spent lots of time on each part of my body--from my head, to my neck, back, legs, fingers, and toes. While candles flickered during my treatment, I could hear the wind blowing outside and I felt so peaceful and safe in her soothing treatment room.
The Facial was remarkable. Ashlee started off by cleansing my face and applying a warm cloth on top in order to open my pores. During this time, she gave me a incredible arm and hand massages. After that, she applied a facial scrub, and again, as she let it set in, she bequeathed on me an amazing pressure-point upper-chest massage. To end it, she finished with a facial mask made specifically for my skin type and bestowed on me an invigorating yet gentle neck massage.
At no time did a squirm from discomfort--Ashlee has truly angelic hands.
If this sounds like something you are interested in or know someone else who might be, check out Ashlee's Facebook group or visit the Sanctum website. Ashlee is happy to give out Gift Cards for those that may be interested.
Her prices range from $45-$110. She specializes in Aromatherapy Massage, Shiatsu Massage, Thai Massage,  Swedish Massage, Hot & Cold Stone Massage (My Personal Favourite), Reflexology, Facials and Wraps & Exfoliation.

Just got my nails done!

Monday, December 6, 2010

...And they look gorgeous!
The last time I got my nails done I was placed in a halogen lit room with a bunch of other ladies getting their nails done. The woman who was attending to me talked to her friend in the next booth the whole time! They weren't very gentle either and didn't seem to acknowledge my existence. But Alicia was NOTHING like that!
I had so much fun getting pampered by her! Alicia has just begun her new career as a nail artist and specializes in acrylic nails. On Sunday evening she invited me to her home and showed me to her 'office'.  It was so amazing to watch her build each nail out of powder and gel! When I first asked her to do my nails she asked me what colours I liked, and to my surprise, she had done up three personalized samples for me to choose from!
Alicia created every nail with care and attention to details. She was also great company and is a fantastic listener so don't hesitate to dish on your latest dramas! The only downside to the process is that it takes a long time to create acrylic nails so try not to make plans for right after! Her price list is as follows:
$30 - full set acrylics
$5 for extra glitter and nail art
$25 fill
$15 Nail removal
And from now until Jan.1 when you purchase a full set at regular price you receive your first fill 50% off!
To book your appointment call 250-508-3121 or contact her through her Facebook Group: Nails By Alicia.  She also has many photos available of previous work on her page so check it out!

CUSP Clothing in Victoria BC...

Wednesday, December 1, 2010
CUSP
102-561 Johnson Street,
Victoria, BC
250-381-8614

One of my favourite ways to feel beautiful and confident is to wear something that is uniquely mine, and CUSP is a great place to find that item. Yesterday I visited my friend Alyssa's gorgeous downtown boutique. The store is locally owned and operated by Alyssa and Nicole. The boutique has beautiful handcrafted, one-of-a-kind jewelry and handbags made right here in Victoria! They also sell internationally renowned designers, such as LAMB by Gwen Stephani, Adriano Goldshmeid Jeans & Christopher Kon Handbags. Furthermore, they have an excellent selection of shoes, boots & heels by Dolce Vita, Miss Sixty, Fornarina & Sixty Seven. They have a lovely selection of coats, pants, shoes, tops and dresses but you must act fast and check back often because they only cary one item in a few sizes and then it's gone forever!

As soon as I entered the store I was overcome with the smell of Christmas- cider and cinnamon filled my nostrils and I was ready to shop. The two window displays at CUSP are stunning so check out my pictures below! Also, the artistry on the walls were decadent and the shop was nicely laid out with an upstairs and downstairs area.

The girls at CUSP are always happy to help you find just the right thing so don't be afraid to ask! The store is also conveniently open seven days a week.

Currently, CUSP is apart of the Johnson Street Holiday Food Drive which continues on until December 29th. When you drop off a non-parashable item, you will be entered in a draw to win the Johnson Street Prize Pack worth over $1,000! So come down and show the love for Xmas!If you are interested in finding out more information, check out the CUSP website

Vichy DermaBlend Concealer

Monday, November 29, 2010
Colour Selection: 5 out of 10
Coverage: 7 out of 10
Blend-ability 6 out of 10
Purchase: $24 @ London Drugs

I don't love this stuff. I use number 15 which has a bit of a yellow undertone to it so I thought it would be good for my under-eye area. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I find that it cakes in the corner of my eye and doesn't blend properly. Also, it settles in the lines in my eyes and accentuates them. Furthermore, there are only a few colours available and they are all fairly dark. The 15 was the closest to my skin tone but did not match correctly. This cover up is also pretty expensive so I would not purchase it again.
Only two days left to enter the November Contest!

Sephora Collection Blockbuster Xmas 2010

Saturday, November 27, 2010
Pigmentation: 8 out of 10
Colour selection: 6.5 out of 10
Savings: 10 out of 10
Purchase: $56 @ Sephora

I have to say I am not in love with this blockbuster. A lot of the colours are alike, and there are a lot of different brown tones and many of them are not very pretty. However, I do think this is an amazing deal for those of you who don't have a very large eyeshadow collection. There are also a lot of lipsticks in this package which I don't like considering you can't take the gloss with you to reapply. I would rather them have just put more eyeshadow colours in the package instead.

I also have some exciting news! Over the next month or so I will be reviewing local products and services so if you have something you would like me to review please let me know and we can chat.

And don't forget to enter our November contest!

Boscia Clarifying Detox Mask....

Thursday, November 25, 2010
Purchase: $30 @ Sephora

I love this stuff! It is formulated without:
Parabens
Sulfates
Synthetic Fregrences

This stuff is great. It is very gentle on my skin and does a great job at soaking up the oils on my skin. It is a deep cleansing kaolin Clay mask that absorbs impurities, controls excess oil, detoxifies and renews the skin. This product also protects against the appearance of aging! I really like this brand so far and it's made of all natural products, so give these amazing gift sets a try:
Boscia Oil-Free Must Haves Kit or
Boscia Clear Complexion Kit

And don't forget to enter in our November Contest. Have a great weekend everyone.

The eye makeup remover alone is $34 plus the full sized eyeshadow pallet is usually $55, and the glosses are $22 a piece and you get two plus way more in this package!

Rimmel Eyeliner... not so great

Saturday, November 20, 2010
Rimmel Soft Kohl Liner
Colour: 10 out of 10
Long Lasting: 4 out of 10
Smudgeproof: 1 out of 10
Purchase: $7 at London Drugs

This stuff is not so great. I put it on about an hour before I exercised and when I was done it was smudged all down my face- no thanks! I was really not impressed with this product. In fact, I tried it again for the evening and within a few hours it was smudged and running again so when I got home I threw it out. Garbage.

DDF Toner Review...

Friday, November 19, 2010
Purchase: $38 @ Sephora

What this is:
A toner complete with Glycolic Acid 10%. This stuff is great if you are trying to get rid of fine lines, acne scars, and dark spots. Also, the Glycolic acid gets rid of dull skin cells so it helps keep your  complexion looking bright and youthful.

What it is formulated to do:
This texture-refining blend visibly decreases pore size while improving overall skin condition. Glycolic Acid (an alpha hydroxy acid) helps to increase cellular turnover while Sodium PCA offers a natural moisturizing factor found in healthy skin. Lactic acid and aloe vera contribute further toning and soothing benefits.
Glycolic Acid is the stuff that facial peels is made out of, so instead of getting a peel done once a month, try this stuff every second day! It also comes in 5% so pick whichever one suites your skin type best. I use this toner every second day or so after I cleanse at night. It is a great way to rid your skin of dead skin cells on the surface. This is especially important come winter time because the skin on your face gets dry and chapped from the cold wind.

As I've said before, I don't like to tone my face too often because I am afraid it will encourage more sebum production, however, this stuff is great to use every second day for oily skin. If you have dry to normal skin I would say go for it ever evening but work up to every evening. So for the first week do it every second night, then move up to ever night during the second week.

Don't forget to check out this month's contest

Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel....

Monday, November 15, 2010
Makeup removing power: 9 out of 10
Feel: 9 out of 10
Purchase: $30 @ Sephora

I just received a sample of this from Sephora and it was great! It has a nice soapy lather and got off most of my makeup in one try! Even my tough eye makeup came off pretty easily with this stuff. And best of all? It is a natural product made without:

- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Synthetic Fragrances
- Synthetic Dyes
- Phthalates
- GMOs
- Triclosan

I have the clay mask in this brand and I also love it! It makes my skin feel soft and clear after and I didn't notice any skin irritation!
Also, make sure to enter out November Contest! Great prizes to be won!

Urban Decay Primer Potion...YAY!

Saturday, November 13, 2010
Staying Power: 10 out of 10
Colour: 10 out of 10 (nude)
Container: 2 out of 10
Price: $20-34 dollars @ Sephora

This stuff is a cult classic! Every blog I have ever read loves this stuff and I do to. The only catch is that I have sensitive eyes and the first few times I used it, it burned a bit! AHHH!! So if you have sensitive eyes I would not recommend this. Otherwise, voted by almost every makeup blog, it is the best stuff!

This potion is an eyeshadow primer so you put it all over your lid and some under the lid (if you are applying colour there). It makes the colour last all day long with no creases! Amazing! So if you are a very busy lady and are going to be out all day this stuff is for you! Or, if you are going out to the club this stuff is sweat resistant! Truly amazing!

The one I have is nude but you can actually get it in two new colours. One is a nude shimmer and the other is more of a gold shimmer so depending on what colours you wear you can get the appropriate colour. I like the nude the best as it works well with matts and shimmers and won't add shine.

One problem that everyone runs in to with this stuff is that, because of the shape, you end up missing out on a lot of product. I cut mine in half and scooped out all the excess and put it in a sephora sample jar. And I have now just bought the new PRO SIZE which is a much better container. The wand it comes with is completely unnecessary so the PRO SIZE is way better as I use my fingers to apply it instead.

La Roche Effaclar M

Friday, November 12, 2010
Moisturizing effect: 9 out of 10
Mattifying effect: 7 out of 10
Purchase: $30 @ London Drugs

I do not love love this product but I did purchase it one more time because it was such a good deal at half price!! This stuff is a GREAT moisturizer but I found that my T-Zone was  a bit sleek after a few hours wear (even though it was very matt for the first few hours). So, if you don't have oily skin then this moisturizer is fantastic! I would suggest it for combination to dry skin for sure.

How to love the skin you're in....

Wednesday, November 3, 2010
Do you want clean, smooth, blemish free skin? How about no wrinkles? Well, here is a basic cleaning regime that you can tailor to your personal needs. Everyone needs to have a good regime, even if you don't ever get break outs. Washing your face makes your skin healthy and have a better chance at looking younger and fresher in your later years.

1. Always wash your face at night and in the morning.

In the morning:

1. Use a gentle face wash to clean off all the product that you put on the night before. Also, you don't want to use too harsh of a face wash either. In the morning I use Spectro Gel face wash for oily/normal skin. You can also buy it in other formulas so pick which one fits your skin type best.
2. Always use moisturizer! Even if you have oily skin you must lock in moisturizer or else your skin will over-compensate by producing more oil. Again, pick something that matches your skin type. I use Vichy ProMat moisturizing creme.

Night Time:
1. Wash your face with a cleanser that matches your skin type. I use Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash.

2. Tone. My absolute favourite toner is ROC 2 in 1. It is a creme toner that gets rid of all the makeup that your cleanser couldn't remove and you can even use it on your sensitive eye area! Fantastic!
If you have oily skin you can skip a toner but I suggest using a creme toner with some moisturizer in it. Again, an alcohol base toner will rid the skin of sebum and dry it out so that your pores start to excrete more oil.
If you have dry skin, I would also suggest using a creme toner to add moisture to the skin.
If you are worried about wrinkles or dull skin, I would try something with Glycolic Acid in it which helps rejuvenate the skin. You can get toners with 5-10% Glycolic acid so pick the percentage based on your skin type. 5% for sensitive and up from there and 10% for non-sensitive. Or, just to be safe, 8% is a good amount of Glycolic acid concentration.

3. Apply your serum. The serum is specifically formulated to help with your skin problem whether it is large pores, acne, or wrinkles. Put this on first as it is highly concentrated and you want to make sure it goes on to the areas you are concerned with the most. Make sure to stay away from the sensitive eye area. I currently am using Defrin which is a prescription acne drug so I put that on before my moisturizer. Note: This does NOT include spot treatment for acne.

4. About 5-10 minutes after applying the serum, apply your moisturizer to seal in the serum. Make sure to stay away from the sensitive eye area.

5. Then apply eye serum and spot treatments like Spectro Acne Care vanishing Lotion.

What else:
Every two days, exfoliate your skin. Exfoliation rids the skin of dead skin cells and makes your skin look more radiant, as well as, gets rid of skin cells that may clog pores and cause breakouts. I use Vichy Normaderm Scrub every time I have a shower. The shower is a great place to exfoliate because your skin is soft and supple from the steam and it lets the product really work deep in to pores to rid them of dirt. Also, since I'm in the shower I can scrub my neck area and hair line without worrying about scrubbing beads getting stuck in my hair--instead, it easily rinses away!

At least once a week, use a facial mask. For oily skin use a clay mask, for other skin types use a peel off mask.

The importance of washing your makeup brushes....

Saturday, October 30, 2010
Hi everyone!
So a friend of mine suggested I started to write some articles on the blog. I have a few ideas and this is the one she suggested to me!

Makeup brushes, if you choose to use them, please make sure to wash! Washing your brush is important for at least three good reasons. First of all, the oil from your skin transfers to your brushes and so does the bacteria in the area from the room you choose to store/use it in. So, if you use it in the bathroom, then you can imagine that bacteria immediate in to the area after you flush the toilet! YUCK! This bacteria can cause break outs or skin irritations so washing your face brushes is extremely important.
Another good reason, is that your makeup application will be much smoother if your makeup brush is clean. Because your brush is covered in oils it soaks up the makeup and keeps it on the brush instead of distributing it evenly all over your face. The goal is to have your makeup on your skin not your brush!
And finally, your makeup brushes will last longer! If you properly care for your brushes you won't have to replace them as often. Every time you use your eyeshadow brush some eyeshadow is deposited on to the brush and if you don't wash it regularly the colour won't come out and the bristles might begin to get brittle and break off or become too heavy so they loosen from the brush handle.

So the question is, how to wash them?
Just like your face, your brushes should have a regular washing routine. Depending on how often you use the brush, you should wash them well once a week (specifically brushes you use on your face if you put on powder and foundation every day). Also, it is good to quickly wash the brush after every use with a quick drying formula.
These are the two I use:

Purchase: $10 @ M.A.C. cosmetics

Use MAC makeup brush cleanser once a week. Don't know how to properly clean your brush? Check out this link

Purchase: $13.50 @ London Drugs
And I use this after every use (Mostly), it is a quick drying formula so if you realize you still need to use the brush you can use it about 3 minutes after you apply the cleaner. To use this type of cleaner, spray a cotton ball with the cleaner and immediately gently rub the brush in a circular or back and forth motion (like a paint brush) to remove some of the colour. This stuff is great for cleaning eye makeup brushes you want to use during one application with different colours!

Styli-Style Liquid Eye Liner....

Friday, October 29, 2010

Pick of the day!
Purchase: $7 at London Drugs (discontinued at the store, not sure where you can find it now! Sorry!) Amazon $7.50
Long Lasting: 10 out of 10
Colour Selections: 9 out of 10

This stuff is fantastic! It even lasted all day on my waterline which has never happened for me before! The unfortunate part, is that LD no longer carries this product. I should have purchased two!
Anyways, this stuff is fantastic, and I even figured out that you can pull out the tip and flip it for a whole new tip if the tip begins to fray after awhile! Great idea! One of the cosmetitions at my work told me that she loved the regular Styli-Style eyeliner so apparently the khol pencils are great too! Awesome product!

Do you want long, beautiful, NATURAL lashes??

Tuesday, October 26, 2010

Long Lashes: 10 out of 10
Volumizing: 8 out of 10
Purchase: $60 @ London Drugs, on sale for $39.99

This stuff is AMAZING! Put it on before bed for about three weeks and BLAMO! Amazingly long lashes! My lashes are SO LONG right now! However, I did buy it for its volumizing promises which I haven't noticed as much. That might be because I just don't have that many hair follicles for hair to grow out of! But yes, this stuff really works! I think what it does is makes it that your eyelashes are a lot stronger and don't fall out as much, therefore, they become nice and long. However, if you don't have hair follicles for your eyelashes to grow out of it can't just make you have fuller lashes.

The one downfall is, is that this stuff is pretty pricey at regular price. However, it has gone on sale twice over the last 6 months at LD so I'll keep you all posted on sales!

UPDATE OCTOBER 27th: If you are worried about pigmentation colouring, eye irritation etc check out this link.

Badgal Lash a Bad Lash Enhancer?

Friday, October 22, 2010

Benefit BADgal Lash

Purchase: Sephora

Price: $9-19

Volumizing effect: 7 out of 10

Separating effect: 9 out of 10

At first try I really liked this stuff. It separated my lashes and made them look fairly thick. The brush is very big and so it is hard to miss a lash with this thing. However, the volumizing effect was lost quickly and after the 5-8th time I used it I only noticed a lot of separation. Also, I didn't feel like very much product was going on (which is a good thing for those of you who are SICK of clumply lashes). I suggest trying the trial sized one (the $9 one that I have) and seeing if you like the effect before spending the big bucks.

Does your favourite brand test on animals?

Thursday, October 21, 2010
So my friend sent me this link and it has a list of products that DO NOT test on animals and a list that does! Check it out!

Bunk Hair Curler? Redken Curling Foam.

Purchase: Hair Salons
Curling Power: 7 out of 10
Holding Power: 5 out of 10

The immediate curling action of this product is pretty good. However, the hold does not last very long, specifically for those of us with naturally straight or slightly wavy hair. The hair is pretty crunchy after use as well so when you move your hair around throughout the day, it ends up changing shape and losing its curl. I am not sure how well this would work on people with curly hair though so feel free to comment if you've used it before!

M.A.C. Cosmetics Prep + Prime Loose Powder

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Price: $27.00
Purchase: M.A.C. online

Rating: 6.5 out of 10

This is no miracle product but it does help a with shine a bit. Although it is called 'prep and prime' it is actually meant to be put on AFTER foundation and/or powder. However, I feel that putting on foundation, plus a face powder, plus this powder, is a bit much to put on your face. Especially if you are worrying about breaking out or looking cakey. I do like to use this product alone though, especially if I just put a little moisturizer on and then put the powder on after to keep my face from getting greasy--it definitely works better without having foundation/powder on first. Basically, the more product you put on your face the more likely it is to smudge off... often I will have foundation primer on, foundation, and a setting powder so adding the prime and prep is a LOT of stuff. If you are going to try this product, I suggest using it either just over moisturizer, or use it instead of a translucent or coloured pressed/loose powder. If you use it directly after your foundation it keeps a mattified look for longer!

Sephora Collection Double Ended Smokey Eye Brush

Saturday, October 16, 2010
Purchase: $22 @ Sephora
Product Rating: 6.5 out of 10

There is nothing special about this brush. It is a good value brush because it has two different brushes on each end. However, the rounded end of the brush is quite stiff and I find that it turns my lid pink and makes it sore the next day. I don't have overly sensitive lids but this one definitely makes it sensitive. The rounded brush isn't really that necessary for blending. You can find much softer and better brushes, for instance, the M.A.C. 217 brush or the Lise Watier rounded brush (Review to come). If you are looking to save money then this might be a good option for you. However, if you are looking for quality there are other options out there. I suggest using a Q-Tip to smudge your eyeshadow to make a smokey eye, or even your finger, instead of this stiff, bristly brush.

MAC 217 Blending Brush

Monday, October 4, 2010

Purchase: $27 @ M.A.C.

An amazing brush! You can do so much with this! First, you can use it as a flat brush to apply colour all over the lid. Then, you can put it in your crease/outside corner of the eye to blend in a darker colour for an accent.... the bristles are pretty stiff so the colour goes on really thick! If you are blending, make sure to have very little colour on the brush and just blend blend blend! The make up artist at M.A.C. SWORE by this brush! Also, I have found that a lot of online beauty bloggers use this brush.... So I would say this is a MUST HAVE BRUSH if you are looking to have just a few key tools in your kit!

Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Matte Foundation

Saturday, October 2, 2010

Coverage: 8 out of 10
Colour matching: 10 out of 10
Price: $31
Mattifying effect: 5 out of 10

This stuff is pretty great! Contrary to popular belief, this mineral make-up works on all skin types (Dry, combination, oily). It looks like a powder but it is actually not, it is more like a cream.
Not only is it a foundation, but you can use it as a cover-up! Even better, this stuff is SPF 15!!
Also, Sephora has a great deal on right now that you can pick your own foundation and add it to a starter kit for $70-75! It includes 1 face brush, 1 blush brush, 1 cover-up brush and your choice of regular and matte foundation. Unfortunately though, my face still gets slick around my T-Zone by mid-afternoon so this stuff doesn't really help keep my matte. There is also an original formula so you can choose the look you want.

Research Results:
Here's what women have said:
- 93% saw minimized pores*
- 85% experienced improved skin clarity with continued use*
- 89% said this foundation reduced oily shine throughout the day*
*Based on an independent consumer study

Facial primer..

Friday, September 24, 2010
Bare Escentuals PRIME TIME

Price: $8 for a travel size at Sephora more for a larger size

I'm not really sure how much I believe in facial primers but this stuff definitely starts out great. It leaves my skin feeling and looking smooth and matt right after I apply it and gives my foundation a good base to cling to. However, it's mattifying effect doesn't last forever. I will often use this before I put on my bare escentuals foundation but by 3 hours in to school my face will start looking oily again.

But if you don't have oily skin this stuff might just work for you! Definitely try it out, it comes in a travel size as well to giver-a-test!

Foundation Application Brush....

Sunday, September 12, 2010
Sephora Collection Professionnel Platinum Air Brush #55

Coverage:8 out of 10
Bristle Softness: 10 out of 10
Make up application: 10 out of 10
Purchase: Sephora.com / Sephora stores $34

Its claims:
Sephora Brand Professionnel Platinum Air Brush #55 is the secret to the smoothest foundation finish possible. This essential tool blends as it applies, allowing for a smooth, natural-looking result. Build from light to heavy with ease as you continue application—your results will be perfectly pretty at every level of coverage.

The girl at the Sephora store recommended this to me for a flawless and full coverage finish and she was right! This brush is awesome! It is SO SOFT and has synthetic bristles so it doesn't soak up the product (like real hair), instead, it just grabs the foundation and deposits it back on your face! It also is made to give you that 'airbrush' finish so that your make up doesn't look caked on and I agree!

Application Instructions: Put a little blob of your liquid foundation on your hand, swirl the brush, and then work on to your face in circular motions. I like to start in the centre of my face, mostly around my T-zone area as that is where my acne scars and redness usually is, and then blend in to the cheeks and outer corners of the face!

A question for you guys: Should I start posting before/after pics of products that I use? I was thinking of starting to post some eye make up looks and explain to you what colours I used and how I did it... I'm not sure if anyone is interested in that or not? But I thought it might be fun!

Thickening hair creme

Sunday, September 5, 2010

Thickening= 8 out of 10
Price= $14-24

I love this stuff! I'll admit, I've never used a thickening creme before but I really like how my hair feels after I use this and then blow dry. And if I don't blow dry, it gives me a nice piecey look! Fantastic stuff!

M.A.C. Lipstick/gloss

Friday, September 3, 2010
Hey there!
So I am not sure how many of you have the same problem as me, but when I put on lip stick it always looks like the colour is 'out of the lines' and when I wipe it away, it looks like I missed a spot!

Anyways, I found a nice nude lipstick combo that I wanted to share with you guys!

The colour is a sort of a wine/nude colour.

Price: $17.50 CA each
First I start with Lustre Lipstick in To Pamper and than layer with Lipglass in Spree.

It looks great! Feel free to stop in at your local M.A.C. shop and sample the lip duo!

Don't bother with this one...

Wednesday, September 1, 2010
So awhile back I purchased
On A Clear Day Protection Cream 1oz

....and I haven't found any benefits of it!

I have read many reviews saying people liked it but in my opinion it is not worth the money. It claims that it will camouflage small skin imperfections. It also says that it can be used under makeup to help create a smooth flawless complexion. Furthermore, it contains silicone to help condition and protect the skin (but remember, silicone is a PLASTIC so if you are worried about that then this is not for you!). It also contains a natural enzyme to help reduce surface breakout.

Yes, it left my skin feeling soft and smooth, however, as soon as you try to put foundation on it cakes in certain spots and kind of slides around and creates an un-even look. If you are going to get this stuff, I would suggest waiting a bit before applying the make-up so that it has enough time to sink in to skin.

Also, it didn't irritate my skin at all which is always a plus but I really didn't feel that it was much better than anything else I have tried so far.

Today's review:

Vichy Dermablend Skin Concealer

Concealing power: 7 out of 10
Price: $25 @ London Drugs

This is a liquid concealer and works great under the eye area. I use #01 and it has a bit of a yellowish tone to it which makes it perfect to counter-act the blue/purple that comes out under the eye area. However, it is hard to use over blemishes because it brings out the flakiness that may occur from using acne-fighting cleansers and products. Also, this stuff is expensive so I'm sure there is something, just as good, out there for undereye correction for cheaper but I do suggest giving it a try out if you haven't already. The other negative is that LD seems to always be out of the #01 (the lightest colour) so if you are fair like me, it might be difficult to colour match.

SALES!SALES!SALES!

Shimmering Sands....

Saturday, July 10, 2010
This is my favourite Cover Girl Trio:

Shimmering Sands

Pigment: 9 out of 10
Blendability: 9 out of 10
Colour matching: 10 out of 10

I absolutely love this trio! It is 'cheap' and all the colours work great together. I usually use all three, the lightest on my brow bone, the darkest on the outer corners and the middle colour on the inner corners. I have also had many compliments on my eyeshadow when I wear this trio. And the best part? It gives you a pretty natural yet 'fancy' eye look! I highly recommend it! In fact, Cover Girl is my second favourite department store brand and just over 50% of their eyeshadows are true to colour when put on your eyes.
